about

This song was written by Quincy and Kari Roan. The first time I heard Quincy's scratch recording of this song, I was floored. Quincy asked me if I thought it was too much or over the top. I responded with "of course it's over the top...and I LOVE IT." Quincy played all of the instruments on this one. All on his keyboard. We just added the extra vocals.

Quincy's original recording had him singing the "hallelujah" section of the song. I was hearing some of high soprano sound, but wasn't sure how to pull this off. Then we attended one of daughters' choir concerts. This was the exact sound I wanted to hear. I emailed their choir directors asking if they might be willing to help me record this, and prayed that at least one of them would respond favorably. One of them did respond, saying that she would be happy to help. I notated the vocal parts, at least to the best of my ability. My wife, Jennifer, then reviewed and made some adjustments. My brother-in-law, Jeremy Talley, wrote the "Noel" vocal section that the adult sing along with the kids. The recording of the kids was done in a less than ideal location. At that time, I didn't have a good recording space at home. So we set up at the middle school inside of the practice rooms. We recorded one part at a time and the kids did a great job. Jennifer and the kids' choir director also sang with the kids to give some vocal support.

The adult vocal record process was interesting. To be able to record a number of Quincy's songs from home, I built a large vocal booth from PVC pipe and moving blankets. It was large enough to fit 3 good sized men side by side. The only real problem is that the booth didn't allow air to circulate, so it could get very hot. Several of our recording sessions were done during the summer, so this made things even hotter.

After recording the tenors, the guys stepped out and looked like they had just run a marathon. I felt really bad and was thinking they wouldn't want to speak to me again. But one of them said "that was great...do you need help with anything else." It was then that I realized how truly blessed I was to have so many talented friends who were willing to help. Many of these individuals never met Quincy. They simply heard his story and wanted to help.

Rob Morgan, a friend of mine from (Redding) California mixed the song. Rob is one of the best mixers I know. There's nobody I would have trusted with mixing this song more than Rob.

If you are interested using this song for your church, school, or other choir, please let me know and I can provide the performance track as well as the vocal sheet music.
