about

This is one of Quincy's two Christmas songs. Unlike "The Night When Christ Was Born", this one is very simple. Quincy's scratch recording included only included piano, a fake guitar track (played on keyboard) and lead vocal. I kept Quincy's piano part and had a friend, Daran Deshazo, record the acoustic guitar. Daran and I played together for several years in the worship band at First Colleyville. He's an incredible guitarist, to say the least. Plus, he has a nylon string guitar, which I love the sound of.

Jeremy's lead vocal was recorded at DBU, where Quincy, Jeremy, and I all attended. I thought about adding a second vocal on the chorus to sing a higher harmony, but later decided to leave this one simple. Listening to the three elements that were recorded, it seemed like enough. Especially when you consider the message of the song.

This song has come to mean more to me in the past year. Last year during the holidays, after being diagnosed with a terminal illness just over a year before, my dad was placed in hospice. I was really concerned that going through this kind of loss at this time of the year was going to ruin Christmas. Surprisingly, the opposite turned out to be true. This really put things into perspective. Suddenly, the commercialism that we have attached to Christmas completely lost its appeal. For probably the first time in my life, I couldn't have cared less what I got for Christmas - or even if I got anything at all.

At the same time, the real meaning of Christmas became even more precious. It was all about Jesus. Only He could bring hope to the hopeless. Only He could bring salvation to the lost. Only He could bring joy to a world that is broken. Finally, my focus was completely on Him and I knew that He was enough. Through seasons of joy and sorrow, He was enough.

And so, the lyrics of this song suddenly hit very close to home.

And when the seasons change
And everything’s packed away
And all the memories fade
Holiday join has strayed
Still our hope remains
Because the Savior came

lyrics

Verse 1
Staring out the window pane, I can see it’s Christmas Eve again
Twinkling lights and falling snow, singing songs beside the fire’s glow
All is calm and all is bright tonight

Verse 2
The tree is trimmed and dressed in white, with bows and bells and candy canes and more
The kids all warm and snug in bed, milk and cookies wait for Santa’s sled
All is calm and all is bright tonight

Chorus
And when the seasons change
And everything’s packed away
And all the memories fade
Holiday join has strayed
Still our hope remains
Because the Savior came

Pre-Chorus
All is calm and all is bright tonight

Chorus
And when the seasons change
And everything’s packed away
And all the memories fade
Holiday join has strayed
Still our hope remains
Because the Savior came
